Information of seme-final:
*1st : saw Peru bow out to Uruguay on the 19th July at the La Plata Stadium. The match was a lot more open than many expected as Uruguay took the match within 90 minutes, 2-0. Man of the hour was Liverpool’s Luis Suarez who scored both of Uruguay’s second-half goals to sink the Peruvians, and send Uruguay into their first Copa final since 1999.
Suarez netted twice inside five minutes to settle the game in the early stages of the second half. Not only did his goals ensure Uruguayan babies will be named after him all this week, it also took him level with top-scorer for the tournament, Sergio Aguero. It’s worth noting that Aguero went out with Argentina, so only Suarez can add to his goal tally. Peru didn’t do themselves any favours when their captain Juan Manuel Vargas was red carded for a nasty elbow. But the people of Peru will still give them a heroes’ welcome for what they achieved this tournament. Now Uruguay vs Paraguay.
*2nd: saw Paraguay beat Venezuela. They made heavy work of it though as neither team was able to break down the other inside 90 minutes, what’s more they couldn’t find a goal even in extra time. So it came down to penalties, it was all even after four spot kicks then Riveros put Paraguay 3-2, but next up Venezuela’s Lucena missed his kick to put the advantage squarely with Paraguay. Pressure brought forth diamonds as Martinez kept his nerve and buried his penalty, next up was Fedor for Venezuela , it would be adios Venezuela but he dutifully scored for his country. With the penalty shoot-out scores at 4-3. Step up Darío Verón, your country needs you… He shoots… He scores! and there’s no need for Venezuela to take their fifth penalty. Interestingly, Paraguay have made it to the final without winning a single game in 90 minutes. They drew all three group games and have needed penalties in the knock out stages.
Now it’s the Copa America 2011 final: Uruguay vs Paraguay.
This handicapper is going out on a limb with this one, after his success in both semi-finals I think there will be goals, both ways Uruguay have won the Copa America three times, while Paraguay have won it just the once. It’s six times, which could mean they’re more used to NOT winning finals? There has only been one 0-0 final in the Copa America era, in the 1979 playoff. So discount that scoreline. There have been plenty of clean sheets but I feel that although Uruguay will score, they won’t be the only one. Copa America 2011 final: Uruguay vs Paraguay.
