Thomas Voeckler took a massive stride towards overall in victory in the 2011 Tour de France as he held on to the leader's yellow jersey, with Belgian Jelle Vanendert claiming the win on the 14th stage ride on Saturday.
Vanendert took advantage of an indecisive pack to breakaway with 7km remaining and reached the top of Plateau de Beille on his own, ahead of Spains Samuel Sanchez and Andy Schleck of Luxembourg.98th Tour de France / Le Tour de France 2011.
Jelle Vanendert of Belgium won the biggest race of his career after the Omega Pharma-Lotto rider won stage 14 of the Tour de France, the 168.6-kilometre ride from Saint-Gaudens to Plateau de Beille.
But the real winner of the day was French rider Thomas Voeckler who retained the leader's yellow jersey and must now surely be considered among the favourites for overall victory.
Instead, Voeckler now holds a lead of 1min 49sec over Frank Schleck of Luxembourg.98th Tour de France / Le Tour de France 2011.
Voeckler told reporters after he finished seventh in the 168.5km stage from Saint Gaudens.
